Big Blue Bus

Due to over- population, the City of Santa Monica launched its own bus line. Thus, in 1928, a blue color scheme was chosen for all the buses throughout the city of Santa Monica. In the first week itself, 16,000 passengers rode the new buses. Their service was called Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines. The drivers incorporated as Bay Cities Transit Company operated buses throughout the city. . It serves as transportation planner and coordinator, designer, builder and operator for one of the country's largest, most populous counties.

In 1947, the bus fare was 10 cents. By 1950, Bay Cities Transit sold out to Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines and was given a new and a unique name, The Blue Bus. Annually, there are 21 million passengers who travel in nearly 210 buses. The name was officially changed to "Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus" in 1999. The agency also renovated the graphic design to the eye- catching “ice blue” on each bus which attracted the large mass.

The Big Blue Bus has won the American Transportation Association's Outstanding Achievement Award for the 4th time since 1983. 43% of the buses are fueled by by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) which is 77% cleaner burning than diesel- fueled buses. The Blue Bus Service has proved to be the most efficient, customer- friendly transport and wills to provide the best service in the whole world.
