The Amtrak was designed to consolidate passenger terminals of the Southern Pacific, Atchison Topeka, Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroads into a single station.

Amtrak services to the Northwest, Midwest, and South, as well as between Los Angeles and San Diego. There was no commuter rail service before the 1980's in all of Southern California. Commuter rail service reappeared briefly in the early 1980's when Caltrans began operating the Los Angeles - Oxnard service.

In the 1990's, the Caltrans and Amtrak led to the creation of Metrolink.

The seating accommodations depend on the route. The seating is divided into various classes like coach class and business class which provides ample leg room and is provided on a first- come, first- served basis.

When onboard, one can use the personal electronic items like PC, DVD etc but in order to maintain a pleasant atmosphere, one should keep the volume low of such electronic devices. They also rent portable entertainment devices.
