Watts Towers
In 1921, a construction worker named Simon Rodia started work on what is now the Watts Towers. It took Rodia three decades to build this giant artistic project which was completed in 1954. The Watts Towers is built out of masses of seashells, bed frames, pipe structures, and scrap metal. It is now one of the key attractions in Los Angeles. However, visiting the Watts Towers (even if it is one of the key attractions in Los Angeles) should always be avoided after sunset because the Watts neighborhood was the site of unrest and riots in the year 1965 and again in 1992. You have to pay an admission fee of 2 US dollars for adult visitors, and a dollar and fifty cents for elderly and military visitors. Children get free admission.
Museum of Tolerance
One of the lesser-known attractions in Los Angeles is the Museum of Tolerance which examines why people of different cultures are either tolerant of each other or are cruel to one another by exhibiting prejudice and racism. The Holocaust where it is believed six million Jews were exterminated by the Nazis is given as a prime example of intolerance towards other peoples. If you should visit the Museum of Tolerance during your tour of attractions in Los Angeles, expect to encounter a gallery where special exhibitions can be held, a research floor, two theaters, and interactive exhibits as well. The Museum of Tolerance offers only self-guided tours and charges $5.50 for young and student visitors, $7 for the elderly aged at least 62, and $9 for other adults.
