Anza- Borrego Desert State Park is the largest contiguous state park. The park derived its first name from the Spanish soldier Anza, who in 1775 led a group of 242 men, women, and children, plus cattle and horses, from the Gulf of Mexico to the California coast and the other half, Borrego means rare bighorn sheep.

The park offers excellent recreation facilities for people of all ages. People who want a refreshing outdoor experience or those who want to have a great vocation after hectic days work can stretch out their muscles and enjoy the scenic beauty around. All this would rejuvenate their burdened minds.

Spread over 600,000- acre area, the park provides an out of the world experience. The park also features great flora and fauna like- dry lake beds, sandstone canyons, granite mountains, palm groves and springs and 600 desert plants.

When planning a trip here, keep in mind that temperatures rise to as high as 125°F (52°C) in July and August. Winters days are very comfortable with temperatures averaging around 70°F (21°C) December through January, but note that nighttime temps can drop to freezing - - hypothermia is as big a killer out here as the heat.
