The Los Angeles Times is a daily newspaper which is published and sold in Los Angeles, California. It is also known as the LA Times., and has won a whopping 37 Pulitzer Prizes since it was founded in 1881 (up to year 2004.) However, the paid circulation of the Los Angeles Times has been steadily falling since halfway through the 1990s (attributed to the swift change in editors in charge and the rise in the price per paper.) The daily newspaper’s owner The Tribune Company has accepted the takeover offer of billionaire Sam Zell (as of April 2007.) However, other potential buyers may be able to beat Sam Zell’s offer anyway, pending shareholder approval. If these other buyers win, then Sam Zell gains a buyout fee of $25 million.

Business competitors

As of 1989, the Los Angeles Times was the sole newspaper serving Los Angeles because its last rival went out of business then. However, the Los Angeles Times does still have business competitors in other parts of California such as The Daily News of Los Angeles, The Orange County Register, La Opinion, The Pasadena Star-News, The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, The Ventura County Star, The Daily Breeze, and The Long Beach Press-Telegram. As part of its attempts to stay ahead of these business competitors, the Los Angeles Times has diversified into community newspapers as well. It also continues with its investigative reporting activities which have garnered it Pulitzer Prizes in the past. Mark Wiles, its publisher, has been criticized for business decisions that have affected the paper as well.
