California African American Museum

California African American Museum depicts the art and culture from African American Diaspora. Designed by the African American architects, Jack Haywood and late Vincy Proby, it opened to the general public in 1984. Since then, this 4400 sq. ft. museum has been a constant source of education about modern and contemporary art. With a wonderful collection of art work, this place signifies the culture of the Africo- Americans. From time to time, the museum organizes various cultural programs and events inviting contemporary artists, historians, activists and educators.

The museum also offers educational programs and workshops featuring music, film, and the fine arts. It presents attitudes of a period when African Americans were viewed as inhuman and incapable of educational and aesthetic pursuits in life.

These works show the type of art historical context that African Americans participated in prior to coming to the United States.
More than 20,000 items of books, periodicals, and records is also available to serve the general public on days when the Museum is open and by appointment.
